Many people have suffered from sore muscles at some point in their lives. Whether they be caused by sports injuries or everyday activity, they often ache for a few days before they’re as good as new. But have you ever stopped to think about all of the different parts that make up the entire muscular system and how they are used in everyday life? In other words, what is the main function of the muscular system?

The human muscular system consists of over 600 different muscles, and these muscles can be divided into the following three categories:

  • Skeletal muscles: These are the muscles that you are able to control. In fact, skeletal muscles were used to type out this sentence. As part of your mobility muscular system, they are attached to your skeleton and allow you to run, jump, climb, etc.
  • Smooth muscles: These muscles cannot be controlled by your conscious mind. They can be found in the lining of organs, such as the stomach. The main function of these muscles is to help with digestion, urination, and even childbirth.
  • Cardiac muscles: Lastly, these muscles are found exclusively in the heart. They are the muscles that cause the contractions that pump blood throughout the body. Cardiac muscles give you your heartbeat. Similar to smooth muscles, you cannot control them.

Though two out of the three categories are involuntary muscles that you have no control over, there are still so many things that you can do because of your skeletal muscles.

What is The Main Function of the Muscular System?

By now, you’ve probably asked yourself: ‘what is the main function of the muscular system’. Generally speaking, the major functions of the muscular system include:

Stability, Mobility, & Posture

The body’s core muscles are located in… well, you guessed it – the core. These muscles, located in your abdomen, back, and pelvis, help your body stand, sit, and kneel – basically, they give your body the balance and posture it needs to function. Good posture comes from strong, flexible muscles. In the case that your mobility muscular system is stiff or weak, you may have to deal with poor posture or a misalignment of the body.

When your muscles are not keeping your body stable, they are helping you do other things. They allow you to pick up a fork, walk down the stairs, or throw a baseball. Your skeletal muscles are responsible for all of that.

  • Your mobility muscular system contracts to enable gross and fine movement. Gross movement refers to large, coordinated motions, such as:
    • Walking
    • Swimming
    • Running
    • Jumping
  • Whereas, fine movement refers to smaller motions, including:
    • Writing
    • Speaking
    • Facial expressions

Note that while most muscle movement is under conscious control, some may be involuntary, such as removing a hand from a source of heat.

It’s important to take care of your mobility and muscular system and ensure it’s in good shape. Other Functions of Skeletal Muscles

Think stability, posture, and mobility are the only major functions of the muscular system? Think again!

Skeletal muscles are also the muscles behind a few of the body’s main functions. They help with sight as your eye sockets contain six skeletal muscles that allow you to move your eyes around. These muscles work quickly and effectively, allowing your eyes to:

  • Maintain a stable image
  • Track moving objects
  • Take in the surrounding environment

Another main function of the muscular system is that skeletal muscles are responsible for is respiration. That’s right, without these muscles, you wouldn’t be able to breathe. The diaphragm is a thin skeletal muscle located beneath the lungs that aids in respiration. However, in order to breathe heavier, perhaps during exercise, other muscles are involved in the process.

Muscles in the torso protect the internal organs at the front, sides, and back of the body. The bones of the spine and the ribs provide further protection to some of your most vital organs: the heart, lungs, and spinal cord. Additionally, a major function of the muscular system is to absorb shock and reduce friction in the joints. This way, they can safeguard your bones.
